North Sea Port

The problem

The problem

The Havenhuis is located in a beautifully renovated building on the banks of the Leie, on the historic Graslei in Ghent. In the Havenhuis, national and international companies and guests from the entire port area of North Sea Port are received. The building has salons for this purpose, and both the basement and the attic can accommodate guests. In the basement floor, however, the acoustics were very poor until recently. This floor was renovated into a multipurpose room, but was thus not so inviting to receive guests. We solved this problem.

Our solution

Our solution

During the reverberation measurement, it immediately became clear that there was a serious reverberation problem: the sound kept reverberating in the room for up to 1.8 seconds. In consultation with the client, we opted to halve the reverberation time and calculated a solution to achieve 0.9 seconds of reverberation time.

We placed two black COUSTwalls (acoustic wall coverings) to stay in the existing color palette of the walls, and hung some series of COUSTbreezes in front of the glass wall separating the entrance from the auditorium. Finally, we added some mobile acoustic columns (COUSTbase) on wheels to further absorb sound without taking up much available space. With this, we achieved the promised result: finally this space could be used for its intended purpose!
