Private home in Zemst

The problem

This family's beautiful new home is set amid the greenery in Zemst. An oasis of calm, you would think. However, we find the typical aspects that we find in many newly built houses today, which cause reverberation and unrest: austere furnishing, hard and smooth materials (ceramic tile floor), a mezzanine leading to a higher office, large windows with a lot of light... The family found that the conversations at the dining table were not so easy when the children were playing in the living room. COUST sent a specialist on site to help them.

Our solution

A reverberation time of 1.3 seconds was observed in the living space. Especially the space around the void proved to be a problem. This makes sense, as a void acts as a tube into which sound is reflected and thus transported upstairs/downstairs. To thoroughly address this problem, the family chose to reduce the reverberation time to less than 0.9 seconds.

Result

According to their wish, we installed a ceiling panel (COUSTceiling) above the dining table with some pass-throughs for the designer hand lamps. And in the loft itself, we placed our custom wall covering (COUSTwall) in RAL 9010 (warm white) above the window. This COUSTwall was built completely seamless on site and continues into the second floor office. In doing so, we created an inside corner to allow the COUSTwall to reach over the custom furniture in the office space. The end result is a perfectly unobtrusive acoustic “panel” that completely blends into the interior, and thus very satisfied customers!
